• Boothby chosen for Divergent Leadership Training

    October 04, 2017
Chamber’s Candace Boothby one of 10 executives
nationwide chosen for Divergent Leadership Training

(Newnan, GA) – In the business world, “divergence” is a word used to describe the tendency of group members to become less like each other over time. Some experts say the pace and intensity of the 21st century requires divergent action, and in this regard, divergence is the ability to generate new and different ideas, novel solutions and a culture of leadership that builds for the future rather than the present. Someone who is a divergent leader learns to make something new and vital out of the status quo.

Candace Boothby, president and CEO of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, was recently selected as one of only 10 chamber executives nationwide to participate in the first Divergent Leadership Training to be offered by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE).

ACCE’s Board of Directors hosted an enlightening presentation on Divergent Leaders at their spring board meeting. They received such an overwhelming response from the board that they created a face-to-face leadership workshop with the same presenter, Michael Maness, who leads the Divergent Leadership Training workshop. The goal is to have ACCE continue to leverage the Horizon Initiative, which focuses on the influences that will shape chambers of all sizes over the next decade. The divergent leadership training is intended to cultivate the very professionals who will lead this charge.

The concept of Divergent Leadership Training is based on a concept called human-centered transformation. This concept is based on decades of experience and research on what makes individuals, teams and organizations thrive. Boothby and the other nine Chamber executives will attend the training on October 23 and 24, 2017.

Presenter Michael Maness is a leading thinker on innovation, media and the transformational impact of the Internet. Maness became the first ever Innovator-in-Residence at the Harvard Business School. The position was created as part of the Digital Initiative at HBS, an effort that brings together leading scholars and practitioners to explore the re-invention of business in a digital, networked and media-rich environment. His exploration and research investigates why innovation fails or thrives in business cultures, and more information about his work is available at www.createsubculture.com.

Prior to his current role, Maness was the Vice-President of Journalism and Media Innovation at the Knight Foundation. This $2.5 billion private foundation is dedicated to creating informed and engaged communities and is the largest funder of nonprofit journalism in the United States. While at Knight, Maness managed an active portfolio of over $125 million of projects dedicated to driving the digital transformation of the media field. He was also the chair of the Knight Enterprise Fund, an active investor in for-profit media start-ups. The fund’s value more than doubled under his leadership, and he continues as an active advisor.
